Toxins: What are They and What Can They Do?

Many things that we take for granted and consider to be harmless can actually turn out to be very harmful indeed. The fact that many substances are permitted, in our food, in the home, in the atmosphere and on our skin does not mean that they are harmless. There are many permitted food colors and additives, permitted medical drugs, permitted social and industrial practices that are not completely safe.

Toxins are any substances that are harmful to the body. The body sees toxins as poisons that need to be eliminated. To carry out the breakdown of the toxins and their elimination the body has to use energy and nutrient resources. The body finds some toxins more easily eliminated than others - some toxins stay in the body for very long periods of time and the body finds them difficult to get rid of. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium are examples of toxins that the body finds difficult to remove. This means that they are stored in the body and particularly in the liver - where they cause damage and impair function.

The toxins that surround us include chemical, physical and biological substances. Many toxins are obvious, however others are not detectable by sight, smell, taste or touch. It is all too easy to take our current patterns and behaviours as normal and assume that they are safe. Many people assume that 'it can't be all that bad for you or it wouldn't be allowed'. Unfortunately this isn't the case. Many toxins are used for their 'benefits'. It is easy to praise chemical that stop moulds from forming on foods or kill individual pathogens or keep our homes cleans and pest free or the food processing that allows less time to be spent in the kitchen. It is easy to ignore the harmful consequences of these substances and practices. These harmful consequences are hidden - for a while at lest. However, eventually their effect is felt - in all sorts of health problems.

Many of the toxins can be avoided. You can do a great deal to reduce the toxins that you ingest and what you use in your home and on your skin.

The following are some case examples of the health effects associated with the build up of toxins in the body.

Helen aged 53, suffered from general aches and pains as well as psoriasis on her elbows and forearms. With proper cleansing to remove the toxins from her body her aches and pains went and her psoriasis improved markedly.

Joan aged 37, suffered from headaches as well as frequent cold like symptoms and sinus problems.
