Make Your Own Insect Repellent

During the summer months mosquitoes can become a deterrant to going outdoors. If we use commercial insect repellents we are going to be exposed to a number of toxic chemicals and many of the chemicals can be absorbed directly through the skin. If you are trying to remove toxins from your body then covering yourself with toxic insect repellant is not what you want to do. This article provides a natural herbal insect repellant that you can make yourself. Making your own insect repellant is easy, and much more natural than the insect repellants commercially available.

The essential oils of citronella and eucalyptus can be used as the repellants. Use approximately 1/2 teaspoon of each together with 1/2 teaspoon of rose geranium essential oil or lavender essential oil (depending on the fragrance you prefer)and add this to about 1/2 cup of distilled witch hazel. Mix the essential oils and the distilled witch hazel and place them in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle well before each spraying. Spray onto exposed skin - but make sure you avoid the eyes and mucous membranes.

The same essential oils can be combined into about 1/4 cup of vegetable oil and mixed well. This can then be applied directly to the skin.

Make sure that you keep oil away from your eyes and mouth, and be careful not to rub your eyes after applying the repellent with your fingers. Wash you hands thoroughly.
