Keys to Happiness

Happiness is something that we all seek. We need to be able to find happiness - no matter what our personal circumstances. There are many factors that people associate with making then happy. Some believe that happiness will be found in material possessions. Some believe happiness comes with certain other people. Some believe happiness is being able to do what we want, when we want without the constraints of ill health or financial or political circumstances. Some believe that people are either born happy or born unhappy. There is an element of truth in all of these beliefs.

It is my personal understanding that happiness comes to those who learn to be at peace with themselves, in any circumstances, finding happiness within themselves, not in externals. There is no doubt that health, strong relationships, financial and political circumstances can contribute to our happiness. Most of us feel happiest when we are feeling well and spending time with others with whom we share interests and values. But even then, our happiness ultimately comes from knowing who we are and being comfortable with ourselves and our world.

I think there are certain keys to personal happiness. We need to know:

  • who we are,
  • what we believe,
  • what is important to us, and
  • how we can move toward the achievement of our goals and dreams.

I also think that happiness requires balance in our lives. We need to balance:

  • the things we must do with the things we want to do,
  • work and play, and
  • time alone and time with others.

This seems to be the foundation for a happy life. Happiness is a major factor in finding health and visa versa.
