Energy and the Body

There are many people in the medical science field who consider energy fields or pathways to be a vital factor in health and healing. This idea that 'energy' is vital is slowly gaining credence. However, because of the very conservative nature of modern medicine the concept is slow to enter mainstream practice.

During the 1940s and 1950s medical scientist such as Harold Burr discovered that a bioelectrical field with direct current potential pervaded the entire organism of living creatures. This bioelectrical field was shown to provide integration and direction for growth processes in the body. Burr, working at Yale University, found that "life-fields" could produce a result across a space or gap and that the intensity of the field was directly related to the health or organs and cells in the individual. The field intensity is greater when we are experiencing well-being and is diminished when we are feeling exhausted. There are also changes to the field following injury and surgery - even small cut produced changes as they healed. Research around the field has continued, for example, Huggins and Yang found that carcinogenic agents produce their destructive effects because of their capacity for electron transfer within cells and tissues. There is growing evidence that demonstrates the relationship between electrical fields, the body, the nervous system and immunity.

Chinese medicine views the body as being in a state of continual, multiple and interdependent fluctuations. The patterns of these fluctuations are described in terms of the flow of ch'i or energy. The concept of ch'i plays an important role in Chinese medicine. The flow of ch'i keeps the person alive - imbalances in the ch'i and hence illnesses occur when the ch'i does not circulate properly. From Western medicines perspective there is now considerable documentation to show electrical resistance and thermosensitivity over the body surface that corresponds to the ch'i flow pressure points. In Chinese medicine the energy flow does not cease at the boundary of the body, but is part of the integrated whole - where all are interconnected.

The idea of interconnectedness of individuals is not as yet accepted by many scientists but there have been some interesting experiments that have pointed to its existence. In the 1980s Bevan Reid working at the University of Sydney noticed the phenomenon called action at a distance through the observation of crystals growing in his laboratory. The type of growth the crystals displayed was affected by substances that where nearby - but not actually in contact with the crystals. Some of the substances were in the laboratory next door and the effect continued even when the substances were moved far enough away to discount electromagnet effect.

Following the work on crystals was the effect of action at a distance involving bacteria. The effect on cells through space from the drug colchicum was noted. Cells were inoculated with the drug and died - uninoculated cells died in spite of a barrier from their quartz or glass containers. The colchicum was moved further away to discount any electromagnetic transmission - the cell still died. In another experiment a similar effect occurred (from as far away as the next building) with the drug Vinblastine.

Work has also been done with humans. In 1994, the Einstein, Padowski, Rosen experiment was conducted. The experiment was called, "The Paradox in the Brain: Transferred Potential." In this experiment, two strangers were given a few minutes to meet each other. They were separated into two electromagnetic cages, 50 feet apart, so they were unable to see each other. Both subjects were connected to neurological probes. A penlight was shone into one subject's eyes, which caused neurological activity to peak. At the same instant, the other subject registered the exact same neurological activity, even though he was resting comfortably with no light in his eyes. The experiment was repeated at greater distances with the same results.

The conclusion from the experiment that, it didn't matter how far the subjects were separated - the transfer of energy information would still occur instantly.

In another experiment white blood cells, known as leukocytes, were scraped from the mouths of volunteers. These leukocytes were centrifuged and placed in a test tube. Probes from a recording polygraph were then inserted into the tube. The volunteer who donated the cheek cells was seated in a room separate from the donated cells. The volunteer was shown a television program with many violent scenes. When the volunteer watched scenes of fighting and killing, the probe from the polygraph detected extreme excitation in the mouth cells, even though they were in a room down the hall. Subsequent repeats of the experiment produced the same results, even when donor cells were separated up to fifty miles apart, two days after the donation. The donated cells remained energetically and non-locally connected with their donor and seemed to 'remember' where they came from.

These experiments are just some of the evidence that we have that the body is an energy field and that our energy does not stop at our skin. Even though Western medicine has been slow to work with these understanding there are many other healing traditions that are based on understanding the energy flow and balancing these energies. In these traditions energy is seen as the cause of health or disease and not a by-product of physiological processes. These approaches should not be discounted and we should consider incorporating them into our approach to health and healing.
