Case Study: Premenstrual Tension and Fluid Retention

Mrs V. was a 40 year old part time shop assistant.

She had experienced severe premenstrual fluid retention and irritability for the past 10 years. She noticed that her weight could increase by 6 or 7 lbs in the week before her period. Treatment with diuretic drugs, that produced a loss of water were only of a temporary benefit.

Investigations found that she had a very low level of magnesium (1.6 mmol/l, the normal range is 2-3 mmol/l). Low magnesium is a common finding in women with premenstrual tension and can be made worse with diuretics.

Her condition improved with:

  • following a safe colon cleansing program using the recipies suggested

  • a very low salt diet, (her conditioned worsened if she consumed salty foods or if she ate foods containing wheat)

  • multivitamin and mineral supplements with the addition of extra magnesium

  • herbal formula that contained black cohosh and chasteberry among other herbs

  • Omega 3 fish oil supplements

  • probiotics (friendly bacteria)

  • stopping her oral contraceptives

Her condition improved over a period of three months. She continued with the colon cleansing approach and the nutrients but was able to cease the herbal formula.
