It is not an exaggeration to suggest that all sick people have some form of bowel trouble. All ill people are tired, worn out and toxin laden. Proper bowel functioning is a prerequisite for staying healthy. Without a clean and properly working bowel all other therapies fall far short of their potential - although they can make a great improvement. As Dr Jensen stated "The ‘sewer system' must work properly or the body remains soaking in its own putrid waste, encouraging disease processes and forever eluding health-building and vitality-building forces."
There is growing acknowledgement that the bowel is important and that colon health is vital for overall health. However, there is still a large section of the medical field that holds the idea - leave it alone, it will take care of itself and it's not a nice topic to talk about. This has promoted a misconception about bowel function and this has lead to many people having problems with their bowel. Degenerative conditions of the colon are increasing in frequency and severity. Diverticulitis is increasingly common. Each year approximately 135,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer. It is the third leading cause of cancer death in the Unites States - 60,000 people per year die from colorectal cancer. Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, comedian Milton Berle and movie actresses Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Montgomery all died from colorectal cancer. In addition to diverticulitis and cancer constipation is so common that for many people it is a way of life and laxative sales are booming - as people try to force underactive bowels into action.
The source of all of these problems is a faulty diet - and this is the result of how food is grown and marketed. We are eating more but the food we eat contains limited nutrition. The quality of food has been sacrificed for food that has a long shelf life and most of all to food that will provide a high profit. This has lead to the use of destructive and devitalizing chemicals being added to the food. This ‘foodless' food is promoted and consumed - at the expense of health and vitality! One of the vitamins frequently destroyed in food processing is folic acid. Previous studies have found an association between low levels of folic acid and colon cancer but E. Knock et al. (2006) Cancer Research claims to have found that low levels of folic acid actually trigger colon cancer.
Chemical additives and loss of vitamins and other nutrients are not the only problems with the foods that are often eaten. They are also frequently low in fiber and are high in sugar, salt and saturated fats. The diet also often contains a lot of processed flours in the form of breads and pasta. Some people who eat a lot of these think that they are having a healthy diet. They believe they are following the advice that was provided as absolutely the correct way to eat - the ‘food pyramid'. This pyramid had the grains as the basis of the diet - the bottom, foundational layer of the pyramid. The food pyramid was taught to the public and all school children with the absolute certainty that it was correct. In the time that it has been presented as the correct way to eat the diseases it was meant to correct have continued to increase - even with people who follow its approach! There is increasing evidence that demonstrates that it doesn't have it right and now there is a change to the way the pyramid is constructed so that vegetables now form the foundation of the pyramid.
The changes to the pyramid are still being debated and many people still cling to what they were taught - good diet has at its base grains such as wheat, oats, barley, rye, corn, millet and so forth. However, these grains, particularly when they are refined and processed, act as glue in the bowel.
I only have to think of the way my mother made glue for my creative art projects as a child to see a problem with all these grains. When I wanted to use a lot of glue my mother mixed flour (wheat) and water - we got glue (thanks to the gluten in the grain). This is also what happens in the bowel - the processed grains are mixed with water and these have a strong tendency to ‘stick' to the walls of the bowel. They slow everything down. The ‘stickiness' of the grains was seen as one of its advantages. A bowel of processed oats for breakfast was supposed to ‘stick to your ribs', that is, stop you from being hungry for some time. It will give you a sense of being full because it is slow to digest and move through your system. This is not what you want - the slowing down means that elimination system is slowed and it ‘backs up'. These foods do not provide the bowel with the ‘material' needed to function properly. Every cell in the body feels the result of the accumulation of toxic waste.
There is a large and growing body of evidence that many diseases are caused by auto intoxication. The only way to effectively deal with these diseases is to change the diet, cleanse the colon and assist the body to remove the toxins from its tissues. The cleansing needs to start from the inside out and without this other health measures will not be able to work as effectively as they could. You need to understand how to safely cleanse your colon and what is involved in removing toxins from your body. When you do this your body will be in the best position to heal and repair. You will experience a level of health and vitality that you may not have had for years - and this health and vitality will be lasting.
