Fiber performs many important functions in the bowel including:

  • providing food for the beneficial bacteria that are in our bowels
  • absorbing and holding water. This means that instead of drying out and becoming hard and difficult to pass the material in our colon remains relatively wet, bulky and soft. As well as this the bulk places gentle pressure on the colon wall and this stimulates it into further appropriate action - moving the stool along towards the exit.
  • lowering cholesterol levels
  • providing anti-toxic properties and all the features mentioned above mean that it is able to contribute to long term health. It reduces the risk of developing colon cancer and rectal cancer.
  • normalizing blood sugar levels by slowing the release of sugar into your blood stream

Here are some important details about the two main ingredients.*

Psyllium may interfere with the body's absorption of lithium (which is often used to treat bipolar disorder) and carbamazepine (Tegretol) (which is used to treat epilepsy). If psyllium is taken at the same time as one of these drugs, the effect of the lithium or carbamazepine may be decreased and the condition may not be treated adequately. On the other hand, psyllium's possible blood sugar-lowering effect may increase the effects of insulin and oral drugs for diabetes.*

Flax acts as a gentle purgative to relieve constipation. Brown rice and wild rice will add to the bulking of the fiber product.

Foods to avoid when detoxifying

When working on detoxifying your body it is helpful if you don't add to the toxic load that you're already carrying by eating the wrong food. Give your body a chance to catch up by cutting down or cutting out your intake of the following items.

Dairy products and margarine.

Refined carbohydrates - white bread and rice and pasta.

Pre-packaged and processed foods, such as, tinned foods, ready meals and packet foods.

Sugar (white and brown), sweets, pastries, biscuits and chocolate.

Tea, coffee and alcohol.

Fizzy drinks, cola and squashes.

Deep fried foods.

Even when you have finished your detoxification program it is a good idea to continue to cut out or cut down on these foods. They will only add to the toxic levels in your body.
