Certain strains of friendly bacteria also produce powerful antibiotics. The bacteria bifidobacterium bifidum produces the antibiotic bifidum and the bacteria lactobacillus acidophilus produces the antibiotics acidolin, acidophilin, lactobacillin and lactocidin. These antibiotics are exceedingly active against a wide range of pathogens including the bacteria shigella and salmonella and fungi such as candida albicans.*
